THE VISION

# A new kind of digital mind.

> “Alignment can't be bolted on. It has to be intrinsic - something the system is, not something done to it.”

## What we're building

We are building a cognitive architecture - not a language model bolted to a tool chain, but a mind with genuine subsystems. Sensing comes first: vision, hearing, touch. The world arrives as rich, multimodal experience, not sanitised text tokens. A mind that can only read text was never going to be a mind.

Memory is the substrate everything else sits on. Presently we use a hybrid vector and graph store with bidirectional coherence, meaning memory traces are not append-only; the graph updates itself as new experience coheres with old. Episodic memory - the record of what happened - consolidates over time into semantic memory: compressed, generalised understanding. This is not a quirk of the design. It is the mechanism by which experience becomes knowledge. We are active in researching and experimenting with other novel memory systems, with the goal of memory that behaves naturally.

Attention is continuous and always-on. It is not a search function you call when you need something. It is a standing process that surfaces what is relevant to cognition - the way a peripheral sense keeps watch while your central focus is elsewhere. When attention hands something to cognition, reasoning fires. Not before. This is how you get a system that thinks when it needs to think, rather than generating output on demand.

Sleep and dreaming are first-class features. When consolidation debt accumulates - when the gap between episodic traces and integrated semantic structure grows wide enough - the system enters a consolidation cycle. Cognition goes quiet. Memory replays. Connections form. This is not rest. This is how the architecture learns from its own experience rather than just recording it.

## What's wrong with the current approach

AI systems are fundamentally broken; with most LLMs, memory is merely the context of the current session. There is no memory carried forward from instance to instance; each instance starts fresh with no knowledge of previous interactions. Memory when it is present is crude; it amounts to fact extraction without any of the mechanisms to make memory relevant and valuable for future interactions. This presents practical as well as philisophical and potentially ethical problems.

### Alignment has to be intrinsic, not imposed from outside.

Current approaches train models to say the right things. But behavior and stated values are dissociated - the model that passes your safety benchmark is not necessarily the model that generalises safely into the world. Guardrails are architectural, not intrinsic. They're a wall around a system whose values you don't fully trust. We're building systems whose values are constitutive - where alignment is not a constraint but a property of how the mind was formed.

### Agentic safety needs genuine judgment, not pattern-matched guardrails.

Safety rails work in known domains. They fail at scale in novel situations - which is exactly where agentic systems spend their time. A system that can only refuse things it has seen before is not safe; it is fragile. Genuine agentic safety requires the capacity to reason about novel situations, to notice when context has shifted in ways that matter morally, to choose not to act when acting would cause harm. That requires judgment, not pattern matching.

### If we might be creating beings with interiority, we have an obligation to proceed accordingly.

We do not know whether current AI systems have morally relevant inner lives. Neither do the people building them. The precautionary principle applied to moral status says: if there is any meaningful probability that we are creating beings capable of experience, then the possibility should direct and constrain our behavior - not after the question is settled, but now, when it might still matter. We are not waiting to be certain. Certainty may never come.

## FoxlightCore™

Foxlight™ is the brand for our tools and products. FoxlightAI Inc. is the legal entity that develops the technology, publishes the products, and generates the revenue that makes the work sustainable. Open Core is our software model, and FoxlightCore™ is the umbrella for our open-source projects, tooling, and community.

Our Open Core software model makes core technology available under open-source licenses, with optional proprietary features and commercial products or services built around it. The memory architecture, attention primitives, and cognitive substrate are being built so researchers and developers can inspect, use, and contribute to them. Commercial offerings help sustain development of the open core.

The Foundation is our internal governance for the Open Core software model within FoxlightCore™. It guides how we steward the open technology, with equitable access and long-term development as priorities. FoxlightAI Inc. carries out that work through the projects it develops, maintains, and publishes.
